Enjoy a variety of on-course food and beverage from popular local restaurants, and stay for the award’s reception featuring desserts, drinks, and a variety of raffle items. Whether you play, sponsor, or donate to The Ladies Junior-Am, you are directly affecting the life of a young person in our community. We focus our program outreach on diversification, including robust recruitment of female participants. In keeping with our efforts for female inclusion, we are targeting women owned and operated businesses to assist us in celebrating. All proceeds from the event go toward recruitment and programming for our female participants. This event features threesomes of female golfers paired with a female participant from The First Tee program. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 28th at English Turn Country Club with an 8:30 tee time.
The Zurich Classic – fore!kids foundation
The week of April 23 – April 29 saw The 2018 Zurich Classic take place at TPC Louisiana. In partnership with The FORE! Kids Foundation, The Kelly Gibson Foundation, Louisiana Children’s Hospital, and the Bayou District Foundation, The First Tee of Greater New Orleans was able to host over 300 children for a variety of fun and interactive experiences.
We began the week on Sunday, April 22 with The Zurich Classic Kickoff Parent-Junior Scramble at The Flagstick. Over 20 parent-child teams competed at the indoor golf simulation facility, located in Clearview Mall. The Scramble was a perfect way to get everyone in the mood for the exciting week of golf.
On Tuesday, April 24, school groups from Carver High & The Academy of the Sacred Heart, and our First Tee participants were treated to The Kelly Gibson Foundation’s Junior Golf Clinic. Retired PGA pro and local Kelly Gibson emceed an hour long clinic featuring demos and candid anecdotes from PGA TOUR players, including Jamie Donaldson, 2017 Zurich Champion Cameron Smith, Chad Campbell, Charlie Hoffman, and Saints Hall of Famer Rickey Jackson.
Perhaps the most exciting events took place Wednesday, April 25, with the ever anticipated Pro-Am Caddy Day, and the beginning of The Junior Course Reporter program. Our First Tee participants signed up for shifts on the 3rd hole that would allow them to caddy for the PGA TOUR players during the Pro-Am. From autographs to spotting puts, our caddies mixed and mingled with the “GOATS” of the golf world. Needless to say, it was a day none of them will soon forget. Wednesday also began the three-day assignment of our Junior Course Reporters. Cabrini senior Lori Launey and Mount Carmel eighth grader Vicki Stephens were The First Tee participants selected to rub elbows with the pros in the media tent, while reporting on topics to help them complete their final assignment.
Thursday and Friday brought groups from New Orleans Educare, Joseph A. Craig Charter School, Mary D. Coghill Charter School, and Son of Saint. In tandem with Playbuild NOLA, the groups designed and built their own golf courses out of foam building shapes and enjoyed some very creative face painting.
