Program Policies and Procedures
Welcome to The First Tee of Greater New Orleans! By registering with The First Tee, you are joining a family committed to positively affecting the lives of the youth in our community. At The First Tee, every child is important. We hope you and your child will immediately connect with our Nine Core Values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment. Your commitment to these values is critical for success as your child advances through the Life Skills Experience. The following policies and procedures help everyone, including staff, coaches, counselors, volunteers, participants, and parents, to maximize the benefits offered by The First Tee. We welcome questions, comments, and feedback regarding the contents included in this document. Thank you for your interest in The First Tee!
The First Tee of Greater New Orleans will host a Parent Orientation prior to the beginning of all sessions. Anyone wishing to know more about The First Tee is invited. If you are new to The First Tee and have already registered your child, this orientation is MANDATORY prior to the start of your child’s session. Returning parents need not attend but are always welcome.
Once your child has been registered for either the Life Skills Experience and/or summer camp (“Session”), all announcements regarding your child’s session will be sent via Google Classroom. You must download the Google Classroom app to receive all notifications regarding your child’s session, including (but not limited to) cancellations, rescheduling, time changes, location changes, clothing suggestions, weather announcements, event announcements, daily scheduled activity, and any other information pertaining to your child’s session. In the event of an injury or emergency, the parent/emergency contact that you have provided in registration will be notified by a phone call (see “Safety” section below). If you currently do not have a Gmail account, we suggest that you create one for ease of use. If you do not wish to create a Gmail account, you can still receive Google Classroom announcements. A Google Classroom demonstration will be conducted during Parent Orientation.
The First Tee Life Skills Experience
The First Tee’s Life Skills Experience is a 10-week program culminating in a certification test assessing the participant’s cumulative understanding of the session. The certification process determines a participant’s advancement through the Life Skills Experience. As a new skill is learned every week, we believe that the child is at a distinct disadvantage for missing more than two classes. We advise that you not register your child if you know in advance that he/she will miss two or more of the Life Skills Experiences classes. Participants must attend at least 75% of all Life Skills Experience classes to certify.
All registrations are done via our website at www.firstteenola.org. Space is limited, and we do not hold places. Your child is considered registered once payment has been processed in full. Walk-up registrations will not be accepted. Coaches will not conduct financial transactions of any kind. Same-day registrations will be charged an additional $15 processing fee. You must complete your registration on our website before your child may attend classes. Same-day registration and payment may be completed on the website or at The First Tee office, Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. No one may attend any The First Tee programming until payment has cleared.
The First Tee of Greater New Orleans offers financial aid to qualified participants in the form of session scholarships. Scholarships are a one-time per session use. Eligible participants are recipients of the Federal Free or Reduced Lunch Program. Complete the “Financial Aid” section when registering the child on our web site. The scholarship does not cover any membership/program fees.
All registrations are done via our website at www.firstteenola.org. The First Tee of Greater New Orleans offers weekly registration for summer camp. Space is limited and we do not hold places. If you do not register before 3:00 pm on Friday, your child’s name will not appear on the Monday morning camp roster and will be considered a walk-up camper. Walk-up registrations will not be accepted. Coaches/counselors will not conduct financial transactions of any kind. Same-day registrations will be charged an additional $15 processing fee. You must complete your registration on our website before your child may attend summer camp. Same day registration and payment may be completed on the website or at The First Tee office, Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. No one may attend any The First Tee programming until payment has cleared. The First Tee of Greater New Orleans does not provide financial aid scholarships for our summer camp program.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
The one-time membership/registration fee is non-refundable, no matter the reason for cancellation. This is because coaches and counselors were hired, food and supplies were ordered, and other preparations were made based on the number of registered participants, including your registered child.
If you cancel more than 14 days prior to the date of your first day of your session, you will receive a full refund less the non-refundable membership/registration fee. If you cancel within 14 days of the first date of your session, you will receive a 50% refund less the non-refundable membership/registration fee. No refunds will be given to those parties who cancel on the first day of their registered session. There are no refunds for missed/sick days. We do not prorate for any missed session days. All refund requests must be submitted in writing, no exceptions. The First Tee of Greater New Orleans reserves the right to change the specifics of any class or activity, or to cancel any class, event, or field trip at any time.
Requests to transfer session dates are subject to availability. There is no fee for transferring your dates of registration. You must submit your transfer request at least 7 days in advance of your originally scheduled program.
Staff and Volunteers
Safety is a priority at The First Tee of Greater New Orleans. All program coaches, interns, and counselors have completed the following requirements to work at The First Tee of Greater New Orleans:
- Passed an annual background screening
- Satisfactorily completed the Child Protection Course; the Child Protection e-learning course offers coaches a first look at key issues in youth safety and protection. This e-learning course includes a completion assessment. A certificate of completion is generated only with a 100% correct assessment. The Child Protection e-learning course is a lead coach and volunteer requirement prior to the start of any session.
- Satisfactorily attend and complete the Assistant Coach Training – The Assistant Coach Training (ACT) e-learning course provides an extensive overview of The First Tee Positive Youth Development Model and information for new coaches to assist with the delivery of Life Skills Experience education at their chapter. An assessment is conducted following the training and certificate granted for successful completion. The ACT is an assistant coach requirement prior to the start of any on-course activity.
Parents/guardians are required to sign a Program Participation Waiver during registration for each participant in their household prior to partaking in any The First Tee activity.
All participants must be signed in and out of our programs. Participants are NOT allowed to sign themselves in or out, regardless of age. Participants will not be released to someone who is not his or her parent and/or guardian and who is not listed on the Release Form. You will be given a chance to provide this information during registration.
Coaches are required to start and end classes on time, no matter the number of participants present for class. All parent communication will be held after the session has ended to ensure that full attention is given to the participants.
To ensure participant safety, the following behavior will not be tolerated:
- swinging clubs without permission from instructors
- running on the course and/or practice areas, or entering the pro shop and/or clubhouse at any time without permissions from instructors
- bouncing or throwing golf balls without permission from instructors
- lack of attention or adherence to safety zones
- horseplay and behavior that may cause harm to participants, coaches, or volunteers
- horseplay, sitting, or driving near or in golf carts or any other motorized transportation
If a student displays inappropriate behavior, the following steps will be taken:
- The coach/councilor will speak to the participant to address the problem and review acceptable behavioral expectations.
- If inappropriate behavior does not improve, the Director of Education will notify the child’s parent/guardian.
- If inappropriate behavior persists after parent notification, the participant will be asked to leave the program and will not receive a refund of any kind.
In the event of a severe injury or emergency involving a participant, 911 will immediately be called. Staff will render first aid until someone of higher medical training arrives. Minor or non-threatening injuries will be handled by the on-site coach.
Parents are encouraged to stay and watch their child’s session at a distance prescribed by instructors so as not to have direct contact with any of the participants. Parent participation can disrupt class, make the children uncomfortable, and distract others. Parents interested in volunteering to assist with sessions are encouraged to complete volunteer registration through The First Tee office.
In the event of or possibility of inclement weather, the director of education will notify the parent/guardian of cancellation via Google Classroom at least 2 hours before the scheduled session’s start time. In the event of on-site cancellation, coaches must remain at the facility with participants until the participant’s parents are able to pick up their child. If you do not hear from The First Tee coaching staff that class has been cancelled, consider that class is still going to take place at the regularly scheduled time.
Participants should arrive for sessions dressed in accordance with our partnering golf course’s standards. Clothing choices should also be appropriate for physical activity. Examples are as follows:

- golf pants or shorts (khakis are fine)
